5 Ways To Keep Your Chickens Healthy

If you are a farmer or a person who likes to rear chickens, you must know that the health of any animal while farming is really important. If your hens are not well, they will have a difficult time mating, no mating means no eggs, and no eggs means no more chickens. Plus, they would have a high chance of infecting other hens as well. Whether you are a full- fledged farmer or just someone who does a little poultry farming on the side in your own backyard, healthy and happy hens are the way to go. Here are 5 ways to keep your hens healthy:

Observation

You will be surprised to know that giving your chickens some time and interaction goes such a long way. They need to be social with other chickens as well. Otherwise, feelings of isolation might develop and affect their health. You need to also familiarise yourself with the brood so that they trust you and don’t flutter about angrily if you try to hold them or take some eggs. Every hen has its own personality – some would be quiet while others tend to be quite loud. So once you start observing each of their personalities look out for any behavioural changes, that might clue you into any possible health issues arising in them.

ACV To The Rescue

Apple cider vinegar should be a household staple as it has so many benefits for various things. One of them is mixing some in the water for the hens. It is perfect for preventing any bacteria or infection in your hens. They maintain the PH balance level and your hens are in optimum health. Just make sure that you don’t put too much of it, otherwise the water will get very sour and your chickens will detect that something is fishy and not drink it. Just 1-2 tablespoons of pure ACV in 3-4 litres of water should do the trick. This amount won’t alter the taste of water and your chickens won’t even know anything is different.

Cleaning The Coop And Nest

It goes without saying that cleaning the nest and coop are of utmost importance. You don’t want dirt and poop smeared on the eggs and other places now, do you? Your chickens will remain healthy as well if their living area is cleaned regularly. Replace the straw, look out for any worm infestations anywhere that might harm your chickens. Pick up any fallen feathers, litter etc., and dust the place for dirt as well. Clean the feeders and waterers every few days to ensure hygiene standards.

Feed The Chickens Well

To ensure the proper health of the hens, you need to give them a nutritious feed. This will make them grow stronger and help them lay good eggs. Keep the water fresh and ample enough so that they never run out of it especially in the summers.

Don’t Keep Them Cooped Up All The Time

It is important for the hens to come out and play about in the sun and fresh air. Don’t make them sit inside for too long as it can make them sick.
