Homemade Fish Tank Decoration Ideas for a Freshwater Aquarium

When it comes to fish tank decorations, most people follow the basic ideas that have become rather boring with repetitive.

The standard plastic plants, coloured pebbles, a few rocks and perhaps a scuba diver figurine or an ancient looking treasure chest is not just common to almost every household aquarium, it is usually all that it is present within it.

If you have an aquarium in your office or better still, in your house, it is probably because of your love for these aquatic creatures, a wish to beautify the environment and improve the ambiance of the room or a combination of them all.

So, why stick to the norm and buy commercially available decorations only to have a simple looking fish tank when you can instead personalise as much as you want and in any way that you wish?

Here are a few brilliant ideas you can use to embellish your aquarium and give it a complete wow-factor.

A unique backdrop

The easiest way to take your aquarium to a whole new level is by simply adding a distinct background in the tank. And no, we don’t mean the conventional backgrounds like the picture of a reef or any other underwater scenery.

Why not take your fish for a swim in a lively green forest, under the starlit sky or perhaps even in the outer space?

All you need is a high-quality printout of your favourite picture, some double-sided tape and voila, you have a completely transformed aquarium within minutes.

And the best part about it? You can change the background whenever you feel like it.

Put some pots

If you have some flower pots lying around, scrub them off and put them in the fish tank.

A relatively large pot centered amongst various smaller ones spread all around gives a really fascinating look. Play with pots of different sizes, shapes and colours and your fish will be grateful as well.

The pots will provide an engaging arena for your aquatic fellows to swim around and hide in. However, make sure that you clean the pots thoroughly before use and that they have no sharp edges or broken bits remaining. You can cover the holes beneath the pots but it’s better to let them remain as is if they are big enough for your fish to swim through.

Plastic toys are perfect

Whether you have some spare toys from your child’s collection or not, grab a handful of these items to adorn your aquarium.

Different species of miniature dinosaurs will complement a forest background perfectly. Or you can partially bury some sand toys in the bottom of your sand, stick in a plastic shovel or create any other scene that you like.

Vinyl stickers for the win

Were your teenage years one of those where almost everything that you owned was covered in vinyl stickers?

If you are a sticker fan or your children love to collect stickers, then you can proudly display the collection on the fish tank’s glass. Line them around the edges or place them randomly to give the tank a funky appearance.

A fish tank is a unique way to show your creativity and highlight these amazing creatures. Most people let the opportunity go to waste, but you should not follow suit. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box, or should we say outside of the tank.
