Summers are here and that means it is going to be great weather for riding. Nothing beats summer – you running around beating the heat as the wind rushes all around you. However, if you want to make the most of summer you need to make sure that you start preparing for it already. We know what we have to do for ourselves. Wear clothes that let a lot of air through. Make sure we have sun cream on us at all times. However, you also have to think about the horses and how you can keep them safe and happy this summer. Your numnah plays a large part in how comfortable your horse is, thus making sure that your numnah is summer friendly is vital.
Summer Numnahs
Your horses need the same thing that you do, during the summer. They need something that doesn’t get too hot and become a problem for them to wear. Thus, while in the winters it is fine to use numnahs that block all air on the horse's back and are made of thick materials, you cannot use the same ones when summertime comes. Here are a few things you need to look out for.
The Material
Look for numnahs that are made of a material that lets air circulate. This may seem a bit tough, but you should be easily able to find one online if you’re not able to do so at the shops around you. The difference is all in the material used for the cushioning as well as the fabric that covers the cushioning. A higher quality cushioning will let air circulate and your horse will not feel all sweaty on the back while you are riding it.
The Colours
You should also make sure that you use the right colours when it comes to summer. Dark colours absorb more light than lighter colours. This means that dark colours will get hotter than lighter colours, so make sure that you get the numnah in a light colour that befits the weather. Once again, online shops will be your go-to option here. The collection they have of numnahs is much greater than anything you would be able to find in a brick-and-mortar store around you. You can easily find numnahs in just the colours that you want them in.
Taking care of yourself
You should also make sure that you are properly prepared for the coming summers. Many areas are seeing record high temperatures, and getting dehydrated is a big possibility. Always make sure you drink water and keep some water on you. Make sure you take lots of breaks in between your riding and give both yourself and your horse the chance to rejuvenate.
