Essential Grooming Guide for Your Horse

You can’t make a list of the most beautiful animals in the world without mentioning the majestic horse. Horses are the embodiment of power, courage, loyalty and a free spirit. Horses, alongside other equine animals, have been used and domesticated for centuries. Breeders would pick out the most docile horses that could be made to do useful work and breed them amongst each other to give rise to horses that were not only docile but also relatively easy to handle.

With the passage of time, our methods have also progressed when it comes to equine care. Horses are divinely handsome creatures with their luscious tails, broad neck, strong structure and angelic manes. However, with some minor tweaks here and there, you can make the horse seem even more beautiful! With some grooming, you can bring out your horse’s natural beauty.

Let’s go through some handy grooming tips

  • Omega 3 Fatty acid is a polyunsaturated healthy fat for humans and animals. It has many vital physiological and biochemical functions, one of which is adding a natural shine to your horse’s coat. An adequate intake of Omega 3 fatty acids is necessary to attain a healthy skin and that much desired coat shine, so ask your vet about adding Omega 3 fatty acid supplement to your horse’s balanced diet.
  • Race horses do a lot of regular training, and after every workout they sweat just like we do to regulate their internal temperature. If not cleaned, their face can be vulnerable to fungal infection, induced hair loss after a long exercise session - something no horse owner would like to see. So, make sure you sponge your horse’s face clean after exercise. Having a range of brushes for each part of the body will also prevent fungal infections
  • Brush your horse every day to evenly distribute out the natural sebum on the horse’s skin. Brush the hair in the direction of hair growth, instead of going against the grain. It is important to know that if you are trying to grow out the mane and tail, then you shouldn’t brush it every day. If you see tangles, use your hands to untangle the hair without breaking any, so that you don’t prevent hair growth.
  • Use hoof care products to keep the hooves in good shape and health. Hooves are often neglected, but if you want groom your horse from top to bottom, then you should use hoof polish products and sprays. You’ll be surprised to feel the difference riding the horse with well kempt hooves.
  • Always use a sponge when washing your horse to absorb as much water as possible. Additionally, use a shampoo and work your way from the front to the back and from the top to the bottom, for safety purposes. Don’t forget to wash the area under the tail and behind the hind legs. After a thorough wash, you can apply sheen on your horse for added shine, but that’s optional.
