A Beginner’s Guide to Equestrian Accessories: What to Wear for a Safe Horse Riding Experience

So you’ve decided to give horse riding a try. That’s wonderful but you can’t pick up this wonderful hobby without having the proper horse-riding equipment!

This is where we and our guide come in. We will help you get started. Equestrian gear doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive and you won’t have to go to several different places to buy them.

As a beginner, the key is to keep your safety and comfort in mind when choosing your riding essentials. Here are a few horse riding essentials that will help you have a safe and enjoyable horse riding experience.

Riding Hats

Horses are unpredictable creatures. At any given point in time, they may perform certain acts that lead to the rider’s fall.

Therefore, you should never mount a horse without a riding hat or helmet on your head.

Footwear

The next most important accessory in a rider’s kit is the footwear. The right footwear would not just protect your feet from a serious injury, but also helps you have better control on your horse by maintaining your grip on the stirrup.

There are two main styles of riding boots available for both men and women: long knee boots and the short ones, also called the Jodhpur boots. You can choose your style according to your own comfort level.

What’s important is to select boots with a short heel (about 1-1.5 inch) and a low tread. Leather boots are ideal but not essential. You must keep your footwear clean so if you go for a water proof pair, that’s an added advantage.

Also, make sure that your boots do not have any buckles or hooks that may get caught in the stirrup.

Gloves

A rider has to have their gloves on no matter how hot or cold the weather is. Aside from protecting your hands (from blistering for example), the gloves will provide you a firm grip on the reins.

Safety Vests or Body Protectors

It is especially advised that men, women and children who are new to horse riding should wear safety vests or body protectors. These safety vests can be of great help in case of a fall or getting kicked by a horse making an amateur rider feel more confident and at ease.

There is no substitute for proper equestrian accessories so you must invest some time and money to get your hands on the right horse riding equipment. After all, is there anything more important than your safety?
