One of the most essential items in any horse riding checklist is helmet. Many riders believe that helmets are for kids or novices who are just learning to ride a horse. But this is not true.
Even the most trained of horses at times act weird, which include getting startled and coming to a halt, jumping, throwing the rider off etc. When any of that happens, a helmet is the only protective gear sure to save you from a cracked skull or misplaced neck bone. Who wouldn’t want that?
For those who don’t know, head injuries make for the most hospital visits annually in the UK. Isn’t that a reason enough to get a helmet for yourself?
You may have been convinced but there are many other who aren’t and won’t be. What are their excuses? Let’s take a look together!
I Can Handle Myself Well On the Horse
It is great that you have learned emergency stops and dismounts but they are not always effective or guaranteed to save you from falling down. Also, they don’t replace the need for a helmet either. Most falls give the rider less than a second to prepare for it.
A Helmet Makes My Head Hurt
The reason your head hurt isn’t due to the helmet but most likely because of dehydration. Many riders make this excuse after a day’s horse riding without even realizing that like any other sport, horse riding also drains one’s energy.
It Messes Up My Hairstyle
Yes, helmet hair is a real thing, but it is no disease. It’s not like you have a shampoo commercial to shoot right after riding your horse. You can always fix your hair with a quick wash and blow dry but we don’t think the same will work for your brain or cracked skull.
They Make Me Sweat a Lot
A helmet will only cause one to sweat if it is too tight. However with the many different sizes available, this excuse genuinely seems made-up. When shopping for helmets you can always try on some and see if it fits your head and isn’t too heavy or tight.
A Helmet Is Expensive
- It is only moderately expensive.
- It is a one-time investment.
They Aren’t Pretty Either
True that! But when its makers were manufacturing one, they didn’t really have its beautification on mind. Their only goal was to manufacture a product that prevents one from suffering a fatal head injury. Irony apart, they can always be personalised with the addition of an eternal shell on the helmet’s cover.
Prevention is always better than cure. These people may not be in their senses (perhaps due to some prior fall accident) but don’t be like them. Investing in a helmet benefits you the most.
